For Models:  TIPS for Make-up for Photography

Never use a heavy make-up look or use it too heavily.  Always build the makeup up in layers so that the face will appear soft and natural looking.  Before the shooting begins have your face checked through the lens to see how it appears under the lighting, and if any adjustments need made, make them.

Remember, make-up helps the portrait photographer achieve the sculptured look we observe in real life.  So, some highlighting and shading will be needed for just about everyone to keep its contours.

Flat powder makeup is recommended for the base and for adding highlights.  The liquid foundations seem to be a little too thick and shiny.  Also, the lights seem to blend better on the face with flat powder make-up.

Do not overdo eye makeup.  Remember here, also, it's a balancing act.  Too much here, a little more there-it's really different for each individual face.

Our job is to capture the inner as well as, the outer beauty.  So don't forget that all the makeup in the world will not make up for the beauty within.

The following sequence corresponds to the picture above.  First, apply a light beige foundation to the face, and then:

1. Highlight and shade the nose lightly.  With an aquiline nose, no shading is even, usually needed.  Just use shading with a slightly larger nose, or, one that is a little larger around the nostrils.

2.  Shade the temples with a deep blush.  The temple area can be blended into the outside of eyelid; as well, as softly into the forehead.

3.  Define the eyes with shading.  Use a deep copper or darker brown on the outer bone structure of the eyes.

4.  Remove the shadows under the eyes.  To make it a little darker under the eyes it can be a bluish color to a darker brown.  You can first use a white cover stick, covered with a lighter beige base, it just depends on the degree of darkness.

5.  Use  pink blush on the cheeks.  Forgetting the high fashion look, a bit of pink gives anyone a young, fresh look.  It's really good for women with long or thin faces, as it gives a horizontal look, offsetting its longness. Keep the pink and burgundy shades close to the cheekbones.

6.  Shade under the cheekbones. This brings out the whole contour of the face and defines the eyes.  Highlight the jawline to bring out the shaded cheakbones,  with your brush use a deeper shade starting from the temple angle towards the mouth.

7.  Highlight the chin. This keeps it from receding .

8.  Make up the eye. Eyebrows should be soft. No harsh lines.  Highlight here add some white to beige base. Blend in deeper blush in gradually, toward the temples. Add some dark brown to the base. Darken the upper eyelid with dark brown pencil or small sponge.  Apply black mascara to both upper and lower lashes do not cake. Add eyeliner on outer edge of lower edge and thicket it as you move out to the outer edge of the eye. You can use white cover stick and lighten as needed also white can be used to lighten the cheekbone and temple. Blend pink blush on top of base. Remember the area under the cheekbones is shaded with the deeper blush colors and the shading is angled slightly down from the back of the cheekbone to the outer edge of the lips, stopping below the cheek area.

9.  Make up the lips with pink shades of lipstick or orange red, not to shiny (not lip gloss) and then outline but not with a sharp edge.

10.  Shade under the jawline this depends on the fullness of the face shading under the jawline and use a darker shade of blush for this.
